Cantes de Ida y Vuelta are a group of flamenco musical forms or palos which were taken to Latin America by Spanish emmigrants. They returned altered by the different ethnic influences of Latin America and were re- introduced into Spanish culture.
I had come to live in Spain in 2001, but for a few years I found myself travelling to Brazil, India and Morocco before eventually returning to live near where I started, in Cadíz.
I painted on what I found - envelopes, restaurant bills, train tickets, paper bags, whatever was around me and interested me. I also painted and drew in books, a mixture of diary, observation and story.
Like the 'Cantes de Ida y Vuelta' I felt profoundly changed by my journey but also more aware of how deep are the roots of my own culture and background.
